2012 Summer Workshops & Tours

Below you will find the list of tours & workshops taking place in May 2012 in conjuncture with the KDF Summer Show.  We advise you book early for all these events, as they are always popular & places are strictly limited. Travel by coach is included in both tours, but you will have to provide your own lunch.  All materials & tools are provided for all the workshops which take place at Kensington Town Hall.

Summer 2012 workshops:

TR1Pollock's Toy Museum – Sir John Soane's Museum - Museum of Childhood

We always want to offer a new tour to our visitors, so this year you will have the opportunity to visit some of London's more quirky museums. First stop is Pollock's Toy Museum where you can see toys & games from bygone era's housed in a quaint London Town House. Then on to Sir John Soane's Museum, crammed full of his life long collection of works of art & antiquities. The final stop is the V&A Museum of Childhood. Here we will have a talk from the curator on their amazing collection of dolls houses.

TR2Queen Mary's Dolls House at Windsor Castle

We have a long-standing relationship with Queen Mary's Dolls House and are delighted that not only will they be returning to Kensington This year to give their talk on new discoveries in the Dolls house, but we have also organised another trip to visit the dolls house itself.
You will travel from a central location in Kensington to Windsor Castle by coach, have a talk by Beth Clackett, then a chance to view the dolls house, time for lunch (not included) and a wander around the rest of the Castle, before returning by coach to Kensington. Places are limited on this tour so please book early to avoid disappointment.

WS1Tine Krijnen – Making a diary or poetry album

Tine will show you how to assemble the diary or album, cut out & glue in the tiny illustrations & write with a very fine pen.

WS2Ann High – Carving a 16th Century Stool

The emphasis of the class will be the enjoyable process of learning how to carve the pierced tracery on a 16th century boarded stool.  Full instructions will be provided so that it can be easily completed at home if time runs out

WS3Lesley's Garden – Making a flower arrangementCANCELLED

Make the classic flowers of period & ultra modern arrangements: peonies (single and double) English roses (not teas) as well as ivy and baby's breath.  Easy to make with Lesley's techniques, you can customize them for your particular color needs and arrangements. With advance notice, the workshop can be prepared for you in 1:24 & 1:48 scales.

WS4Anro Miniatures – Learn how to make an Edwardian beaded bag

Anne Walden-Mills, a member of the Miniature Needlework Society, will show you how to make this delightful Edwardian bag using Peyote stitch. Beginners welcome.

WS5Robert Longstaff – techniques of assembling & finishing a furniture kit SOLD OUT

WS6Moe Miniatures - Making & framing an embroidered picture

New exhibitor Ruth Moe will teach the techniques of making and framing a silk embroidered picture. If you do not finish in class, you will have the needles, thread, instructions, mat and frame necessary to complete it at home. If you need magnification please bring it with you.

FREE Sunday Talks

As usual we are organising some great speakers for our Sunday talks at the KDF.  Confirmed speakers so far:

Everything you need to know about collecting Dolls Houses
Daniel Brookbank, who many of you will know as a writer for The Dolls House Magazine, will be giving a brief history of Dolls houses, followed by identifying makers & tips on restoration. Daniel's expertise in this area will be invaluable for all would-be collectors.

Stories from Queen Mary's Dolls' House
Beth Clackett of the Royal Collections will be back with all the latest about the most famous dolls house of all, Queen Marys Dolls House, with stories of how the house was created.

This year talks will be taking place in Lower Foyer 'Studio 2' Please ask a member of Team KDF for directions.  Please note seats available on a first come first served basis.

FREE Children's Activities

KDF Scavenger Hunt

Open to children of all ages - hunt for GOLDEN MINIATURES hidden around the Festival. Prize to be announced.

 

Gingerbread Craft Club



A change of direction in our crafts club.  We will be having a 'Food' themed event. Details to follow
